An Ode To Mornings…Sort Of~In Which There Is A High Chance Of Singing

Hello, friends!

I am in college. That means I actually have to get up in the morning.

This is a terribly difficult thing for some people. By which I mean PLEASE JUST LET ME SLEEP WHY HAS THE SUN RISEN???

I am not a morning person. So getting up every day for school can be a bit of a trial for me, (especially when I stay up until eleven watching Disney channel movies with my siblings but shhh).

I assume that I am not alone in this terrible struggle to rise from slumber, and thus I have decided to share with you something that I DO enjoy about mornings in the hopes that it may aid you as well.

There are morning themed Broadway songs!

If you don’t like Broadway this is hardly a consolation, but I hope you can indulge me in this.

Here be a nice little list.

“Santa Fe (Prologue)” from Newsies

"Just hold on, kid, till that train makes...Santa Fe."

Okay, so this song isn’t about morning, but it is sung in the morning so it still fits. Also the newsies have to get up way earlier than I do, the poor children.

It’s early morning and Crutchie gets up before the bell rings because he wants to “beat the other fella’s to the street”. He doesn’t want anyone to notice that he hasn’t been “walking so good” and DOESN’T HE JUST MELT YOUR HEART.

Then Jack and Crutchie sing a heartfelt song about their dreams and desires and altogether this is how all mornings should go.

Watch me stand! Watch me run…

-Crutchie

And then my heart breaks a little bit.

Truthfully I haven’t seen this musical and I don’t know much about it, but some of the music is fun. I think it’s about a presidential election or something? And there are corn muffins involved? That’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge.

Anyway, this song is a fitting morning ditty because, well, it’s evident from the title. It’s an easygoing chorus number sung by a bunch of secretaries in the White House, D.C. (They tell us how great it is to be a secretary in the White House, D.C. multiple times throughout the song.)

And I’m feeling swell.

-various secretaries

Some of their chipperness is bound to rub off on me, right?

“Belle” from Beauty and the Beast

It’s just another marginally serene morning for Belle’s provincial town. And this is France, so we say “Bonjour.”

Belle is kind of feeling the drudgery of day to day life and longs for adventure (in the later specified “Great Wide Somewhere”). All the mornings are starting to run together into a hundred bonjours, breads, and sheep that probably aren’t that interested in hearing about your book.

I get you, Belle.

YOU CALL THIS BACON?

-disgruntled towns-person

Never let someone sell you fake bacon.

“Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’!” from Oklahoma

Actually I pretty strongly dislike Oklahoma as a musical, (it’s just…so boring?!?) but my mother used to sing this song to my sisters and me, so it has sentimental value.

Curly is one of those sunny-disposition-optimist types. Also judging by this song I’m guessing he’s a morning person.

The corn is as high as an elephant’s eye.

-Curly

I was sure wondering how tall that corn was, thanks, Curly.

Another one of my not-favorite musicals. But. This song is absolutely so much fun. Fiona is a total dork and I love her even though I’m not big on this musical.

She’s feeling sparkly and alive because morning is her favorite time of day. This is due to a curse and whatnot.

She’s also pretty excited because she’s supposedly getting married later that day. But she hasn’t met her husband yet. Details.

And a bird explodes in this song. Fiona gets a little dangerously enthusiastic at times.

I’ve had six cups of coffee, so I’m really wide awake.

-Fiona

The opposite of me in the morning, but okay.

“Race you to the Top of the Morning” from Secret Garden

Look, everyone, it’s Mandy Patinkin, it’s INIGO MONTOYA.

Okay. I love this musical. And this song.

So technically this song takes place in the darkest part of the night when Archibald Craven sneaks into his estranged son’s room to read to him while he’s asleep, but THE MORNING IS COMING AND THEY’RE TRYING SO HARD TO FIND IT.

So, yes, this constitutes as a morning song.

Would to God I could stay and instead slay your dragon.

-Archibald Craven

And then my heart breaks a little more.

“Does Anybody Have a Map?” from Dear Evan Hansen

Heidi and Cynthia are both mothers with teenagers. Someone help them.

It’s morning on the first day of school, and Heidi is struggling to connect to her son Evan. Cynthia is having similar problems with her son Connor, and Zoey is trying to deal with the fact that her brother finished the milk.

We all have issues.

Can we buck up just enough to see the world won’t fall apart?

-Heidi Hansen

Probably not.

“In the Light of the Virgin Morning” from Jane Eyre

It’s one of those quiet, tranquil mornings where the mist and the flowers are like magic. The surrounding world is beautiful and haunting and serene but inside you are full of turmoil and anguish.

I’m sure you’ve experienced these mornings.

Jane loves Thornfield (the estate) and Mr. Rochester (the human who owns the estate) but she can’t have them. Blanche doesn’t like Thornfield or Mr. Rochester but she feels obligated to have them. Why does the world work this way.

If I leave this unhappy bliss where will my Eden be?

-Jane Eyre

I THINK YOU MEAN “IF I LEAVE THE WARMTH OF MY BED AND VENTURE INTO THE COLD EMBRACE OF ACADEMIA WILL I RETAIN MY SANITY”.

“Good Morning, Good Day” from She Loves Me

Arpad with his bike though.

This is a chipper number sung by a group of work buddies who wish they could go on a picnic instead of going to work. Don’t we all.

When I ride my bike, people see what Maraczek’s like, so I think it’s very important that I look my best.

-Arpad Laszlo

More chipperness. Please let it be contagious.

“Leavin’s not the only way to go” from Big River

Okay, so this song is not really an inspirational morning song. It’s kind of a downer. But it’s a really excellent song to use for an alarm because the first lyrics are extremely fitting:

Did the mornin’ come too early? Was the night not long enough?

-Huck Finn

The answer is almost always YES OF COURSE DO YOU EVEN HAVE TO ASK?

Conclusion

This is how I cope with mornings. Just blast Broadway at your brain and you should be fine. Broadway humans have to get up in the morning too. We can all do this, right?

Do you listen to music? What are some of your favorite morning themed songs?

  1. “Santa Fe (Prologue)”, “Belle”, and “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” are three of my favorite musical theatre songs. I do love Newsies, Beauty and the Beast and Oklahoma- but only Newsies and Beauty and the Beast are in my top ten musicals. It is just Newsies and Beauty and the Beast that are meaningful to me.

I can think of another morning song from musicals- “Good Morning” from Singing in the Rain.

    1. Yes, those songs are so wonderful! “Santa Fe (Prologue)” is one of my favorite morning songs, and both Newsies and Beauty and the Beast are probably in my top ten musicals as well. They are so good!
Oh yeah, I remember that one now! It’s been a while since I’ve listened to any of Singing in the Rain, but there are some really fun songs in that one. That’s definitely a fitting morning song. πŸ™‚

    1. I know, reading kind of steals time away from us. JUST ONE MORE CHAPTER, right? Or maybe “Just one more…book?” I have stayed up far too late reading. It’s so easy to let the time slip by. Belle is pretty relatable. πŸ™‚

  2. Heehee, yeah; mornings are not the best for me. :-Z XD Hey, my mom sang that song to me in the mornings too! πŸ˜€ I haven’t yet seen the Broadway version of the Newsies, but it’s high on my to be watched list. πŸ™‚ When I get up in the mornings, and it’s a pretty bad morning, I blast epic movie score music or Imagine Dragons. XD

    1. It IS kind of an iconic morning song, isn’t it? For the longest time I didn’t realize it was attached to a musical and I half thought my mother had composed it herself.
Ooh, yes! Movie scores are also awesome morning music. Or any time of the day music really. πŸ™‚

  3. I love this list! πŸ™‚ I shall be bookmarking this page in Pocket and check out the songs….

I’m a night owl. Mornings should be outlawed – except for sunrises. They are sooo beautiful.

I keep thinking that if I can be a Disney princess Belle would be right up my alley. (#Bookworm. #People Think Me Odd. Although to be very honest I’m not entirely confident that I can actually have the courage to live in the Beast’s house in the first place. :P)

Have you listened to An American Victory (concept musical)? Storywise it needs a lot of work. But the individual songs are fantastic. I bought it on Amazon on a whim (mostly because Ramin Karimloo sings one single on it) and I love the songs and all the singers ❀ – https://open.spotify.com/album/1QorAWrEDM0LcMQoEqo9LC
Anyway – Glory Bound, Sons of Adventure, People Are Talking, and A Change Will Come are good wakeup songs for me. For heartwrenching (ahem, the ones I listen to over and over again): On The Way To The Ball, How Many Times, All I Am, Revolution, No Way to Change That Now, and A World Away. And I just realized I basically named off just about every song on the album – sorry πŸ˜› You get the idea though, right? πŸ˜‰

      1. Haha, I listen to lots of songs in the morning that aren’t even remotely morning themed and I usually listen to these morning songs…not in the morning. But anyway. I am glad you gave me the recommendation!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I actually started listening through it the other day! I only got about halfway through so far, but I like some of the melodies- I think I like the one that Ramin sings the best (but I am probably biased).

    1. Hehe, yup, they’re great songs. I’m glad you like my list. πŸ™‚
I know! Mornings are so HARD, but sunrises…they’re great. It’s tough.
Yeah, I’ve always kind of thought I would be Belle too. She’s definitely the bookworm Disney princess.
I haven’t listened to that! But I will have to check it out now. I love Ramin Karimloo’s voice. And discovering new music is my jam. Thanks for the recommendation!
